Packing depends on the season, your travel style, and the destinations you'll visit. General travel essentials include comfortable clothing, good walking shoes, a power adapter, a camera, weather-appropriate attire for the season you're traveling, and attire appropriate for visiting religious sites, which can also double as a nice outfit for a night out! For more tips, visit our guide on What to Pack for a Guided Tour.
When visiting religious or cultural sites in India, it is important to dress modestly and respectfully. Choose clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, as many temples and historical sites require conservative attire. Women should avoid sleeveless tops and short skirts, while men are advised to wear long pants instead of shorts. Additionally, be prepared to remove your shoes before entering sacred spaces and consider carrying a scarf or shawl, as some sites may require head coverings. These guidelines will help you honor local customs and enhance your overall experience in India. For a more detailed guide, check What to Wear When Visiting Religious Sites.
Visa requirements vary by country and nationality. U.S. travelers can check the latest visa and entry regulations with our easy-to-use Visa and Passport Requirements Tool.
Most destinations accept major credit cards, but having some local currency can be helpful for small purchases. Learn more about exchanging money in our Guide to Currency Exchange and Payments While Traveling.
In India, tipping is appreciated though not always expected. In restaurants without a service charge, leaving around 10% of your bill is customary. If you are on a guided tour, consider tipping local guides and specialists approximately 200 to 300 Indian Rupees per day if their service meets or exceeds your expectations. Ultimately, tipping is flexible and should reflect your satisfaction with the service provided. To avoid confusion, check our comprehensive Tipping Guide for International Travel.
When traveling in India, respecting a range of cultural customs and traditions is important. For instance, greeting someone with a "Namaste" by placing your palms together and bowing slightly is a common and respectful practice. Using your right hand when giving or receiving items is also customary, as the left hand is considered unclean. When visiting temples or other sacred sites, be sure to dress modestly, remove your shoes, and sometimes cover your head as a sign of respect. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, and maintaining a polite, courteous demeanor in conversations goes a long way. Understanding these customs and showing sensitivity to local traditions will help you build positive interactions and enhance your overall experience in India. We recommend you plan your trip to India between 4 -10 months before you want to travel. Airlines don’t publish fares much further out than 10-11 months. Off-peak (April–May, October–November), you can book for better deals 3–6 months in advance. Luckily, we take care of all of that for you! If travelers want to go for a special anniversary or event, they’ll call us years ahead of time to book so they know they are set and we're handling the details for them. While we love a great last-minute getaway, always ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after you plan to return to the States. Keep current with country entry restrictions, and ensure you have any visas you’ll need to travel. Planning earlier allows you plenty of time to renew your passport or apply for a visa if required.
