Egypt's weather and climate vary significantly depending on the region and the time of year. Overall, the country has a desert climate, characterized by hot and dry summers with temperatures exceeding 100°F (38°C) in many areas. Winters are milder, with daytime temperatures ranging from 59°F to 77°F (15°C to 25°C). Coastal areas, especially along the Mediterranean Sea, experience more moderate temperatures. Egypt generally receives very little rainfall, and much of the country is arid, with desert landscapes dominating the majority of the land. The Nile River, flowing through the country, plays a crucial role in providing water and supporting agriculture in an otherwise dry environment.

On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits

Luggage: Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb

Carry-On Bag: *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”

  • *Please note: A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage.

So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances.

Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.

Packing Tips for Your Tour

Packing for a guided tour of Egypt requires careful consideration due to the country's diverse climate, cultural norms, and the specific activities you'll be participating in. Here's a comprehensive list of packing tips to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable trip:

Clothing:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing: Egypt can be hot, especially in the summer months. Pack lightweight, loose-fitting clothes made from natural fabrics like cotton and linen.
  • Modest attire: Respect local customs by packing modest clothing that covers your shoulders, chest, and knees, especially when visiting religious sites.
  • Scarves or shawls: These can be handy for covering your head and shoulders when entering mosques or other religious sites.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: You'll be exploring a lot, so comfortable walking shoes or sandals are a must.
  • Swimwear: If your tour includes beach or pool visits, pack swimwear.

Keep in Mind Cultural Sensitivity:

  • Respect local customs and traditions by avoiding overly revealing clothing, especially in conservative areas.

Sun Protection:

  • Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
  • Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly.

Accessories:

  • Power adapter: Egypt uses Type C and Type F electrical outlets. Make sure to bring the appropriate adapter for your devices.
  • Portable charger: Keep your devices charged, especially if taking photos or using social apps.

Health and Hygiene:

  • Prescription medications: Bring any necessary medications along with a copy of your prescription.
  • Basic first aid kit: Include essentials like pain relievers, band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and personal medications.
  • Hand sanitizer: Useful for maintaining hand hygiene, especially when water isn't readily available.
  • Insect repellent: Protect yourself from mosquito bites, especially if you'll be in areas prone to malaria or other insect-borne diseases.

Documents:

  • Passport and visa: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date and that you have the necessary visa.
  • Copies of documents: Keep photocopies of your passport, visa, and other important documents in a separate location from the originals.

Electronics:

  • A camera: So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Capture the beauty of Egypt, but be respectful of photography rules at specific sites. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, and be aware that some places may not allow photography at all. Check out our travel photography tips for capturing the best photos of your trips. If you feel comfortable, you can also try the camera on your phone. However, if you want to zoom in or capture moving objects, a camera might be your best bet.
  • Mobile phone.
  • Chargers for each electronic you bring.
  • Travel adapter and/or voltage converter
  • Portable power bank for charging devices on the go.
  • Small travel hair dryer (make sure you have the correct converter and adapter).

Miscellaneous:

  • Small daypack: A lightweight backpack will be handy for carrying essentials during day trips.
  • Travel insurance: It's always a good idea to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events.
  • Reusable water bottle. At GET, we’re all about caring for our planet, and with that in mind, we always recommend that you pack a reusable water bottle for your trip. Bringing your own reusable water bottle or asking for tap water at restaurants means you can make a difference by reducing your vacation plastic waste.
  • A small travel alarm.
  • A travel iron if you like your clothes to be pressed.
  • A travel pillow.
  • A new, blank journal to document your trip. Don't know your travel journal style? Find out here!

Remember that the specific requirements of your tour and personal preferences will influence your packing choices. Research the climate, activities, and cultural norms of the regions you'll be visiting to tailor your packing list accordingly.

Electricity

Most African countries, including South Africa, run on 220-240 volts at 50 Hz. This means that the electrical outlets and voltage used in African countries are different from the standard 110 volts at 60 Hz used in the United States.

If you plan to bring American appliances or electronics to Africa, you will likely need a voltage converter and a plug adapter. Here's what you need to know:

  • Voltage Converter: American appliances designed to run on 110 volts may not function properly or could be damaged if connected directly to the higher voltage in African countries. A voltage converter (also known as a voltage transformer) will step down the voltage to 110 volts, allowing your devices to work safely.
  • Plug Adapter: The physical shape of electrical outlets in African countries may also differ from those in the United States. You'll need a plug adapter to match the American-style plug with the outlets in the destination country.

It's essential to check the voltage and plug type requirements for the specific African country you plan to visit, as they might vary slightly from one country to another. Some modern electronic devices, like laptops and smartphones, are often designed to handle a wide range of voltages, so they might only require a plug adapter. In Kenya, Morocco, and South Africa, the standard electrical voltage is 220-240 volts at 50 Hz. In Namibia, the standard electrical voltage is also 220-240 volts, but it operates at 50 Hz in most areas and at 60 Hz in some regions. If you plan to bring American appliances or electronics to any of these African countries, you will likely need a voltage converter (transformer) as well as a plug adapter.

Before your trip, verify the compatibility of your appliances and devices. You can find this information on the labels or tags of your electronics or in the user manuals. If in doubt, consult with the manufacturer or a qualified electrician.

We suggest buying an adapter that comes with a voltage converter to help reduce the number of things you have to pack. Additionally, it's essential to get any required adapters or converters for your electronic devices before embarking on your guided tour and bringing them along. It's crucial to be cautious when using electrical devices in foreign countries as using incorrect voltage or plugs without the right adapters can cause damage to your devices or even pose a safety hazard.

Hair Dryers in Your Hotel

In hotels in Kenya, South Africa, Morocco, and Namibia, you will typically find hair dryers available for guests to use. These hotels are accustomed to hosting international travelers, and providing hair dryers in the rooms is a common amenity. Some remote safari camps may not have the infrastructure or resources to support electrical appliances like hairdryers due to their location in more pristine and wilderness-focused areas.

It is important to keep in mind that the voltage of the hair dryer provided by the hotel will match the local electrical standards of the country where it is located. For example, in Kenya, South Africa, Morocco, and Namibia, the standard electrical voltage is 220-240 volts at 50 Hz. However, some regions in Namibia may operate at 60 Hz.

You will need a voltage converter (transformer) to safely use your own hair dryer or other 110-volt appliances you bring. Before using your hair dryer or any electronic device, it is important to verify voltage compatibility and use the appropriate plug adapter if necessary. Although many modern hair dryers are designed to be dual voltage, meaning they can work on both 110 volts and 220-240 volts, it is always recommended to double-check the label or user manual to be sure.

If you are unsure about the electrical compatibility or amenities provided by a specific hotel, you can contact them directly before your trip to inquire about the availability of hair dryers and other electrical considerations for international travelers. If you need a hair dryer during your trip but cannot find one in your hotel room, you can inquire with the hotel staff. Many hotels will be able to provide a hair dryer upon request, either at the front desk or through housekeeping.

Air Conditioning

  • Air conditioning is commonly available in various accommodations and public places in Kenya, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa, especially in urban areas and more developed regions. However, the availability of air conditioning can vary based on the type of accommodation and the specific location within each country. In major cities like Nairobi, Marrakech, Casablanca, Fes, Cape Town, and Johannesburg, many hotels, lodges, and upscale accommodations provide air conditioning. However, in more remote or rustic safari lodges or tented camps, air conditioning might be limited or not available.

Regardless of where in the world your tour visits, we do our best to ensure your transportation is as comfortable as can be. On Africa safaris, you may be on a coach part of the time and a 4 X 4 safari vehicle at other times.

Airport transfers

Transfers will depend on the trip you choose and vary among destinations. In general, if you are joining or departing your guided vacation on the first or last day, return transfers between the airport and hotel are included. You’ll find specific information on your itinerary page.

To enable you to personalize your tour experience, you will find a number of Optional Experiences designed to complement the itinerary. These are designed to offer a deeper insight into the culture and character of the areas to be visited and provide some wonderful highlights to your travels. The optional program is designed to let you experience more of what interests you and to get the most from your vacation without replacing or overlapping with anything included in an itinerary.

The majority of Optional Experiences will be offered to you by your Travel Director at the beginning of your trip. Some may be subject to change, depending on the time you are traveling or local circumstances, including weather and days of the week. Your Travel Director will provide further information.

Usually, most Optional Experiences will be priced in the local currency, but please read through the details of individual optional experiences for specific information. Exact payment options will be advised locally by your Travel Director/Local Representative for each Optional Experience, but in many cases, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are all accepted.

Traveling to Africa on a guided tour can be an exciting and enriching experience. However, it's essential to prioritize your health and safety while exploring new territories. Health risks can vary based on the specific countries or regions within Africa you are visiting. Staying informed, prepared, and cautious will go a long way in ensuring a safe and enjoyable travel experience. Always stay in touch with your Travel Director and always follow their recommendations.

Here are some health advice and recommendations for travelers heading to Africa:

Visit the Doctor: Before embarking on your trip, schedule a visit with a medicine specialist or your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized health advice based on your medical history, current health status, and the specific countries you'll be visiting.

Travel Insurance: Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, evacuations, and trip cancellations.

Vaccinations: While there are no vaccine or testing requirements, travelers should ensure that all routine vaccinations are up to date.

  • Routine Vaccinations: These include measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap), and influenza.
  • Yellow Fever: Some countries in Africa require a yellow fever vaccination certificate for entry. Even if not required, it's highly recommended, as yellow fever is a serious disease transmitted by mosquitoes in some regions.

Malaria Prevention: Malaria is prevalent in many parts of Africa. Consult with your healthcare provider about the appropriate malaria prevention measures, such as antimalarial medications and mosquito bite prevention strategies (e.g., insect repellents, mosquito nets, long-sleeved clothing).

Insect Bite Prevention: Besides malaria, mosquitoes can transmit other diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. Use insect repellents containing DEET or Picaridin and wear long-sleeved clothing and pants to reduce the risk of bites.

First Aid Kit: Carry a basic first aid kit with essential items like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, antidiarrheal medication, and any prescribed medications.

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially in hot and humid climates, to prevent dehydration.

Respect Local Customs: Be aware of and respect local customs and traditions, as some practices may have health implications.

In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack a plentiful supply of any medication you may need while on vacation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications.

Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.

When traveling with GET, baggage handling at hotels, service charges, and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals) will all be taken care of by your Travel Director. There are, however, a few instances where individual tipping is welcome.

Local Specialists

It is customary to show appreciation for the insights, stories, and know-how shared with you by the Local Specialists, and we suggest a gratuity equivalent to $1.00-$2.00 USD per person per half day.

Your Coach Driver and Travel Director

The trip cost does not include gratuities for your Travel Director and Driver. At the end of your trip, you may express appreciation to your Travel Director and Driver for their excellent service and the personal attention you received. Gratuities are given at the discretion of each guest, and a suggested amount per person/per day is listed in your travel documents.

For your convenience and ease, there is an option to pre-pay gratuities for the Travel Director and Driver at the time of booking.

Hotel services

It is customary to tip hotel staff for room service delivery if the charge has not already been added to the bill. Where ice machines are not available, and you receive ice from the bar, a small tip to the bartender is always appreciated.

Excellent service and planning! It started with a representative meeting us as soon as we exited the aircraft. We were escorted to the visa purchase requirement, and then through customs. Our hotel overlooked the Nile river. The following morning, we met our tour, Director, Sharif, and actual Egyptologist, extremely knowledgeable, organized, and friendly. seven day cruise was wonderful! Saw everything we could hope for during the two week trip. Highly recommend. Very safe. Everyone we talked to was extremely friendly and helpful.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Egypt is such a warm and welcoming place to visit and we are so happy to see how much you enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience.

Excellent Trafalgar tour guide as well as the rest of the Trafalgar representatives. . Airline seats were messed up as they were last year. Ramses Hilton was a disappointment and needs reevaluation for continued use. Good restaurants in hotel. Nile boat ride was excellent in all aspects. But I don't plan to use GET or Trafalgar again.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We thank you for your valuable feedback and apologize that the seats on your flights were not to your liking. We do recommend reconfirming directly with the airline as these issues are out of our control. But it seems overall you had a wonderful trip to Egypt.

Great itinerary and fantastic tour Director. We saw every place on our bucket list and enjoyed it very much. Hotel in Cairo was wonderful. Cruise ship on the Nile was less than good. Very old, had no drawers in the cabin, so was necessary to live out of our suitcase for a week. Food on the ship was good and staff were extremely helpful.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We apologize for the shortcomings on the cruise portion of the trip and will report this to the trip operator.

They were very helpful in making arrangements for the trip. However, in the future I would not book an adventure where I had over an 8 hour layover in an airport. Not the Grand European Travel fault, just the airlines.

Much to see, early mornings to avoid crowds, lots of sun and sand. Met some great people and it was a small group of 18. Lots and lots of walking. The hot air balloon was great. Visited the El Boerey family and had mint tea and freshly baked bread with honey. Visited a spice shop. Many Pyramids and lots of history.

The promised 5 star Luxury cruise on the Nile was at best a 2.5 star on a old boat with very poorly maintained cabins. Also the travel guide did not provide written schedules or options for side trips.

The booking was ok. It wasn't till we left Egypt, going to Turkey, that I had a problem. I booked and paid for business class seat but got coach seats. I e-mail as soon as I found out, while still in Egypt but never got an answer back.
Response from Grand European Travel:
Thank you for your comments. In reviewing your reservation, you were booked in business class on all flights except the short flight from Cairo to Istanbul where business class was not offered. We apologize if this was not made clear on your flight itinerary.

Some of the hotels were not in the best places. The river boat was old and needed repair. Some people were sent adapter for the electrical current but not all. It is hard to charge a phone that is 110 but 220 is coming out of the wall.

We had the worlds best guide in Egypt, Akram, was so knowledgeable. He answered every question we all had immediately. He got us to every sight early before the crowds. He knew all the people at the sights and they liked him too. We asked for some local experiences and he did those for us. He even joined us in the lounge to play games with us. We invited him to come visit and we were not the only ones to do that and we meant it.

While I got to see all the places and things that I wanted to see, the tour itself was awful. Really hope this tour is not typical of Trafalgar.

Missed my transfer from Cairo airport to hotel. No one there though I advised GET of the flight arriving 40 minutes earlier. 'He says, she says' from the Trafalgar rep. No reimbursment for a 35 dollar taxi. I only found out it was Trafalgar after the purchase for which I wasted money as I am a repeat customer of theirs and booking through I you lost that credit. GET failed to take any action or ownership of the problem, from what i can tell.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We are sorry to hear about the rocky start to your trip. Our records show that we did advise the ground team of your early arrival. Please accept our apologies for the driver not being able to arrive at the airport on time. We have processed a refund for your taxi. All of the trips on our website, brochure and invoices indicate who the operating company is. We are sorry if this was not made clear to you when you booked your trip.
