Canada

  • Official Languages across Canada: English the official language of Canada.
  • Currency used in Canada: The currency of Canada is the Canadian Dollar (C$).
  • Capital Cities:: The capital of Canada is Ottowa.
  • Time Zone(s) in USA & Canada: Several time zones are used across different regions of Canada to establish standard time: Eastern Standard Time (EST), Central Standard Time (CST), Mountain Standard Time (MST), Pacific Standard Time (PST), Atlantic Standard Time (AST), and Newfoundland Standard Time (NST). It's important to note that some regions within each time zone may observe daylight saving time, which would result in a one-hour shift during the daylight saving time period.

USA & Canada passport, visa, and entry requirement information for US citizens.

  • Passport: Your passport should have at least two blank pages for entry stamps. Your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the conclusion of your trip
  • Visa Requirement: A visa is not required to enter Canada.
  • Entry Requirements: You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to getours.com/travel-requirements-restrictions.

The weather and climate in Canada vary significantly due to its vast size and diverse geography. In general, Canada experiences four distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. The country's northern regions have a subarctic and arctic climate characterized by extremely cold winters and short, cool summers. The central and eastern regions have a temperate climate with warm summers and cold winters, while the western coastal areas have a milder maritime climate with mild winters and cool summers. Canada also has various microclimates due to its mountain ranges, such as the Rockies, which can bring significant variations in weather patterns. The Canadian Rockies encompass a large area that includes national parks such as Banff, Jasper, Yoho, and Kootenay.

The weather in the Canadian Rockies can vary widely depending on the time of year and the specific location within the region. Typically, weather in the Rockies looks like this over the seasons:

  • Spring (March to May) is a transitional period, with temperatures gradually warming up. Snow can still be present in higher elevations during early spring. Weather can be unpredictable, with a mix of sunny days, rain, and occasional snow showers.
  • In Summer (June to August), the peak tourist season, expect milder weather and longer daylight hours. Daytime temperatures are generally pleasant, ranging from mild to warm. Be prepared for cooler temperatures in the evenings, especially at higher elevations.
  • Fall (September to October), is also a popular time for visitors due to the stunning fall foliage and fewer crowds. Daytime temperatures start to cool down, and nights can get quite chilly. September can still offer pleasant hiking weather, but by October, snow can start to fall in higher elevations.
  • Winter (November to February) brings colder temperatures, snow, and a popular skiing and snowboarding season. Daytime temperatures can range from chilly to very cold, especially at higher elevations. Winter activities like skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating are popular. Be prepared for road closures and limited access to certain areas due to heavy snowfall.

Keep in mind that weather conditions can change rapidly in mountainous regions, so it's essential to be prepared for a range of temperatures and conditions regardless of the time of year. If you're planning a trip to the Canadian Rockies, it's a good idea to check the weather forecast and pack layers to stay comfortable and adaptable to changing weather conditions.

Additionally, Canada is known for its heavy snowfall in many regions during winter, particularly in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario.

On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits

Luggage: Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb

Carry-On Bag: *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”

  • *Please note: A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage.

So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances.

Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.

Packing Tips for Your Tour

Packing for a guided tour will vary depending on the duration of the trip, the time of year, and the activities planned. Here is a general packing list to help you get started:

Clothing:

  • Comfortable walking shoes: Comfortable walking shoes. Canada offers a vast range of terrains. To make the most of your trip, it is vital to pack shoes that can cater to all your activities. We suggest shoes you can wear for light hikes or long walks.
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing: Pack clothes suitable for the season. Bring a mix of short-sleeved tops, lightweight pants or skirts, and a few long-sleeved options for cooler evenings for the summer months, and long-sleeved and heavier layers for early Spring, Fall, and Winter.
  • Layers: From the snowy peaks of the Rockies to the coastal regions, you’ll encounter a myriad of climates. To ensure you're ready for any situation, it's wise to pack adaptable, layered clothing. We advise you to bring a light jacket or sweater and a scarf for layering, especially in Spring or Fall.
  • Nice evening wear: You may wish to wear a dressier outfit if you plan on dining in an elegant restaurant, for example. Smart-casual clothes are usually acceptable for all included daytime and evening activities throughout your tour.
  • Rain Gear: It's always a good idea to pack a compact rain jacket or umbrella.

Sun Protection:

  • Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
  • Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly.

Medications and First Aid:

  • Any prescription medications you need. (See more below under Health & Wellness)
  • Basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, etc.

Toiletries:

  • Travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
  • Travel towel (quick-drying and compact).
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
  • A washcloth and carry bag (often not available in hotels abroad).

Electronics:

  • A camera: You’re traveling to see extraordinary scenery and sites. So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Check out our travel photography tips for capturing the best photos of your trips. If you feel comfortable, you can also try the camera on your phone. However, if you want to zoom in or capture moving objects, a camera might be your best bet.
  • Mobile phone.
  • Chargers for each electronic you bring.
  • Portable power bank for charging devices on the go.

Miscellaneous:

  • A travel-friendly daypack or bag to carry your essentials during excursions.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Reusable water bottle. At GET, we’re all about caring for our planet, and with that in mind, we always recommend that you pack a reusable water bottle for your trip. Bringing your own reusable water bottle or asking for tap water at restaurants means you can make a difference by reducing your vacation plastic waste.
  • A small travel alarm.
  • A travel iron if you like your clothes to be pressed.
  • A travel pillow.

Optional:

  • A new, blank journal to document your trip. Don't know your travel journal style? Find out here!
  • Ziplock bags (storing snacks, toiletries, and keeping things organized).
  • Small travel hair dryer

Remember to pack light and versatile items that can be mixed and matched for different outfits. Laundry facilities are often available, or you can have your clothes laundered at hotels during your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a small bag or backpack to bring on the coach for day trips and excursions, leaving your larger luggage at the hotel.

Electricity

As an American traveler going on a guided tour of Canada, there are a few essential things to know about electricity and adaptors to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.

  • Voltage and Plug Type: Canada operates on a standard voltage of 120V and a frequency of 60Hz, which is similar to the electricity standards in the United States. This means that most American electronic devices, including laptops, smartphones, and camera chargers, will work in Canada without the need for a voltage converter.
  • Compatibility: In Canada, you'll likely only need a plug adapter to fit your American devices into Canadian outlets. A voltage converter is usually unnecessary because of similar voltage standards. While the voltage is the same as in the United States, the plug types in Canada might be different depending on the region. In most of Canada, Type A and Type B plugs are used. Type A plugs have two flat parallel pins, and Type B plugs have two flat parallel pins and a grounding pin (like the standard US plugs).
  • Hotels and Accommodations: Most hotels and accommodations in Canada provide outlets compatible with American plugs. However, it's still a good idea to carry a plug adapter for convenience.

Hair Dryers in Your Hotel

Most hotels in Canada, especially those in urban and tourist areas, provide hair dryers as a standard amenity in guest rooms or available upon request. Hair dryers are generally found in the bathroom or within the bedroom area.

If you prefer to use your own hair dryer, it's essential to consider voltage compatibility. As Canada uses a standard voltage of 120V, similar to the United States, if your hair dryer is designed to work with 120V (as most American devices are), you should be able to use it without any issues. Make sure you have the appropriate plug adapter to fit your hair dryer's plug into the Canadian outlets.

If your hair dryer is not compatible with 120V or the local voltage, you might need a voltage converter to prevent damage or overheating. Alternatively, you could consider using the hair dryer provided by the hotel to avoid any voltage-related concerns.

You can check out your hotels' websites for specific details about the amenities they offer, including hair dryers, to ensure a comfortable and hassle-free stay in Canada.

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is commonly available in most hotels, restaurants, and public spaces in Canada, especially in major cities and tourist areas.

However, it's important to note that not all accommodations or historic buildings may have air conditioning, particularly in more traditional or rural settings.

Traveling by coach

Our modern air-conditioned coaches have been selected with your comfort in mind. Your Travel Director will familiarize you with all the onboard features, including a washroom fitted for your convenience and comfort. Regular stops are made to stretch your legs, take refreshments, fill up your water bottles, and use the facilities.

Airport transfers

Airport transfers are not included or available on tours that operate in the United States and Canada. Guests will be provided local transfer options after booking so they can make their travel arrangements from the airport to the hotel and vice versa. Learn more about Airport Transfers here.

To enable you to personalize your tour experience, you will find a number of Optional Experiences designed to complement the itinerary. These are designed to offer a deeper insight into the culture and character of the areas to be visited and provide some wonderful highlights to your travels. The optional program is designed to let you experience more of what interests you and to get the most from your vacation without replacing or overlapping with anything included in an itinerary.

The majority of Optional Experiences will be offered to you by your Travel Director at the beginning of your trip. Some may be subject to change, depending on the time you are traveling or local circumstances, including weather and days of the week. Your Travel Director will provide further information.

Exact payment options will be advised locally by your Travel Director/Local Representative for each Optional Experience, but in many cases, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are all accepted.

Traveling on a guided tour can be an exciting and enriching experience. However, it's essential to prioritize your health and safety while exploring new territories. Staying informed, prepared, and cautious will go a long way in ensuring a safe and enjoyable travel experience. Always stay in touch with your Travel Director and always follow their recommendations.

Here are some health advice and recommendations for travelers:

Visit the Doctor: Before embarking on your trip, schedule a visit with a medicine specialist or your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized health advice based on your medical history and current health status.

Travel Insurance: Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, evacuations, and trip cancellations.

First Aid Kit: Carry a basic kit with essential items like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, antidiarrheal medication, and any prescribed medications.

Stay Hydrated: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day, and rest in air-conditioned or shaded areas.

Respect Local Customs: Respect local customs and dress codes, especially in conservative areas. Dress modestly, particularly when visiting religious sites.

In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medications and carry them in their original packaging, along with a copy of your prescription. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications.

Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.

When traveling with GET, baggage handling at hotels, service charges, and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals) will all be taken care of by your Travel Director. There are, however, a few instances where individual tipping is welcome.

Local Specialists

It is customary to show appreciation for the insights, stories, and know-how shared with you by the Local Specialists, and we suggest a gratuity of $1.00-$2.00 USD per person/half day.

Your Coach Driver and Travel Director

The trip cost does not include gratuities for your Travel Director and Driver. At the end of your trip, you may express appreciation to your Travel Director and Driver for their excellent service and the personal attention you received. Gratuities are given at the discretion of each guest, and a suggested amount per person/day is listed in your travel documents.

Hotel services

It is customary to tip hotel staff for room service delivery if the charge has not already been added to the bill. Where ice machines are not available, and you receive ice from the bar, a small tip to the bartender is always appreciated.

This trip was affected by the Jasper files. The Trafalgar staff and especially our tour director Nancy, did a truly amazing job modifying the schedule and activities, It was a wonderful trip Also, I suggest you somehow do a better job describing/marketing the Hockey Experience in Canmore. I was not sure I wanted to do it but boy was I glad I did. It was great, lots of laughs, great camaraderie.

Thank you for your flexibility and understanding with the last minute itinerary changes due to the Jasper wildfire. We are so pleased to see that you enjoyed the trip and especially the Hockey Experience. Thank you for your suggestions which we will pass along to the Tour Operator.

Service
We've used Grand European about 8 times; but not since all the COVID interruptions and requirements. The agent answered all our questions to ensure there wouldn't be extra inconveniences or additional health record requirements/concerns.
Vacation
Even though uncontrollable weather situations affected (but didn't prevent) a couple activities; we were pleased to be part of a diverse group of true spirited travelers. Our guide, Arsen, brought forth the best in everyone, resulting in positive attitudes and truly wonderful experiences in some spectacular settings. There were 25 (?) of us on this tour. Everyone was on time, cheerful, courteous and helpful (if needed) when a few less mobile guests needed a little extra time walking to and from the coach. Our driver, JT, was also right there to assist those individuals who may need it during our stops. Several fellow travelers brought personal stories and expertise (when appropriate) to share with the group. This element of additional knowledge, history and interest was well managed by Arsen in such a way as to add to everyone's experiences. When traveling, we enjoy our "alone time" to explore, rest or enjoy local activities. There was a suitable opportunity to do that. We liked the fact the pace was not to hectic. Most places included multiple night stays. The hotels were very comfortable, clean and nice. Our "group meals" were much better quality than those we've had on some other tours. Service at hotels and restaurants was exceptional and friendly. We felt welcome everywhere we went. The fun but professional rapport between Arsen and JT added an enjoyable atmosphere to this trip. We're not sure if there were any issues with any part of the tour or any other travelers; but if there were, we were totally unaware of anything negative or disruptive. It was a smooth, very enjoyable journey! Arsen warmly shared his very personal love and respect for Canada and that feeling was contagious. We left with the feeling he'd shared something truly dear and special with us.

The Canadian Rockies tour far exceeded our expectations. We were offered extra excursions that turned out to be wonderful. Along the way our tour director also showed us some extra unbelievable sights that we were not expecting. Every minute of our trip was wonderful! A special shout out for both our tour director Ben and driver Asif. Ben was vey knowledgeable and very polite and accommodating to all. He knew the area and its history. We learned a lot about Canada. Ben also went out of his way to educate us through games, etc. on the bus too, and to also give just enough down time on the bus, too. Asif was a wonderful driver and also a local who shared wonderful information when asked. We left the tour leaving two new friends, Ben and Asif! We loved the beautiful scenery and activities Trafalgar, Ben, and Asif gave us.
