Day 2

Budapest

Called the “Queen of the Danube,” in part because of the way the city hugs the banks of the river, Budapest is an enchanting city that vibrantly mixes East and West, medieval and modern. Made up of two parts— Buda (the hills) and Pest (the flatlands)—and divided by the Danube, Hungary’s capital presents an array of architectural styles that reveal its long and varied history. You’ll have two enticing ways to experience the city—a panoramic guided tour aboard a motorcoach with a visit to the Parliament, or discover the Budapest that locals love on a special walking tour of the city’s most important landmarks.

In the evening, a special Captain’s Welcome Reception and Dinner will be prepared for you.

Day 5

Cruising the Wachau Valley, Weissenkirchen (Melk)

Awaken to the spectacular scenery of the Wachau Valley, one of the most beautiful stretches of river landscape in all of Europe. Named for its white church, Weissenkirchen may very well be the prettiest village in the Wachau Valley. A local expert will show you around and introduce you to some regional delicacies, including a wine tasting. Prefer to go for baroque? Visit the 900-year-old Melk Abbey and its extraordinarily opulent library. Later, you can stretch your legs with a vineyard hike.

Passau

Just before reaching Passau, the ship will pass through the famous Schlögener Schlinge—a “gooseneck” or hairpin turn in the Danube. Located at the confluence of three rivers—the Danube, Inn, and Ilz— Passau is well known for its ornate baroque cathedral. Today, the city is unusually well preserved, having been spared the brunt of Allied bombing during WWII, as you’ll see on your walking tour.

Day 8

Nuremberg

Arrive in the archetypal medieval German city of Nuremberg. Nuremberg is justifiably famous for its gingerbread and pocket watches, and it was also the site of some key moments in 20th-century history. You’ll choose between two memorable ways of exploring this exceptional city. You can join a tour of a secret Nazi art bunker hidden underground, or you can accompany a local expert to the city’s most important WWII sites, including the enormous Nazi Party Rally Grounds—the actual site of the Nazi Party rallies.

Onboard: This morning, head up to the top deck or find a seat with a good view—you won’t want to miss seeing the ship navigate its way through a marvel of modern engineering, the Main-Danube Canal. A formidable set of locks, 16 in all, lifts your ship to the crest of the European “continental divide.”

You’ll spend the rest of the day on the peaceful Main River, cruising past quiet Franconian hamlets and picturesque countryside. It’s the perfect time to indulge in the many comforts of your luxury ship while watching some of Europe’s loveliest scenery glide by.

Packing Tips for a River Cruise

Packing for a river cruise will vary depending on the duration of the trip, the time of year, and the activities planned. Here is a general packing list to help you get started:

  • A valid and current passport
  • A copy of your travel insurance and any necessary travel documents.
  • Your Cruise Travel Companion, easily accessible should you need to reference it.
  • Prepare for a variety of weather conditions, depending on your travel season and the regions through which you will be cruising. Layering clothing items is always your best bet, as this allows you to adjust to most temperatures, by removing or adding items throughout the day.
  • Comfortable, sporty, smart-casual daywear is fine both onshore and onboard. Everyday slacks, khakis, walking shorts and everyday skirts/dresses are recommended. For warmer months, bring lightweight clothing that can be layered. For early spring and late fall departures, heavier cotton or wool tops and long-sleeved shirts, and pants are perfectly suitable.
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good ankle support. You will participate in a significant amount of walking over uneven terrain during your time ashore.
  • A lightweight waterproof jacket (preferably a hooded one) for all seasons, and a heavier weight jacket for colder temperatures and destinations.
  • Evening wear: Resort-type wear is perfectly suitable. Men may want to bring a sport jacket for dressier venues and for special events onboard such as the Captain’s Welcome and Farewell festivities. Women may wish to bring a cocktail dress or two for finer dining or entertainment experiences.

Our riverboat cruise was canceled after we had already left the country. Because of the time difference during this unplanned event getting information and help was almost impossible. Generally speaking I have received good service in planning my other trips but I would hope that more help would be provided in unplanned and unexpected circumstances. Much of the time I needed help was over a weekend and it was not available. What if it had been a health or family emergency? Uniworld was able to help but they had the same communication problems and it took several days before I was actually assisted. I had very competent and timely help but it didn't start until 2 days after I received cancelation notification. It's hard to give an "average" review because in this particular experience it was actually way less than I would have expected. Over the years, I have been pleased with GET so this is an averge.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We are sorry to hear that your cruise was cancelled and on such short notice. We were working with the team at Uniworld to make sure everyone was contacted and finding out that you had already left the country did make it more difficult. It was a very unfortunate and unexpected situation and we apologize for all of the stress and inconvenience involved. We are glad that Uniworld was able to find a replacement cruise for you and that you enjoyed yourself on that portion.

Vacation
It was actually better than good but that's because my travel partner and I made the best of an unhappy situation, not because of any assistance we got from GET. We were basically left high and dry to plan the 16 days of time we had once our cruise got canceled. We both chose different options. My companion went totally on her own, creating her own itinerary, booking her own reservations for hotels and transportation, finding her own activities, etc. Not at all what was expected for the 16 days of luxurious river cruising. I opted to have Uniworld book my on a replaced 1 week cruse and once I found the right person there, things went smoothly. The riverbook crew, as always, was outstanding.

Three years ago, I travelled with a friend, who made most of the arrangements. As a result, nothing was in my name, though I paid for my own portion of the trip to GET directly. When we planned for this year’s trip, I asked that we be treated separately, so that my name would be on my travel documents, though we made it clear that we were traveling together. This year, your agents put us on completely different flights! This was very inconvenient, since we were leaving from the same place and trying to arrive at the same hotel. Plus, we did not know that are plane tickets were not together until too late to make any changes. This was because I never received my flight information when the tickets had been purchased, though I did ask. I did not receive anything, until I asked again closer to the flight. At that time I got a response that the person doing my ticketing was out of the office- until after my trip began! I had to find someone else to get me the information. And the most absurd thing about you asking for my review is that the cruise was canceled at the last minute, due to low water levels in the river.

I have used them several times and keep coming back so that says something. I personally dislike these pesky review requests.

It is surprising that you weren't told that my trip was cancelled 3 weeks before departure which caused havoc to summer plans. Would have preferred to hear earlier and been given a detailed reason for cancellation especially since I was emailed information about joining same itinerary 2 weeks later! My friend couldn't join me as she had to return to work then. In addition to having to figure out what to do with her 3 weeks of non-returnable vacation time.
Response from Grand European Travel:
We are terribly sorry about the disruption of your summer plans and cancellation of your original cruise date. Our colleagues at Uniworld were doing everything possible to operate all of their cruise dates but were presented with challenges with reopening from COVID and getting everything repositioned. We do hope that you enjoyed your cruise.
