Medical Issues Abroad
|
| To be on the safe side, if you have a history of any medical condition, you should bring a medical record. This would include: your blood type, immunization record, allergies, medications you are currently taking (both prescription and non-prescription), your doctor's name, address, phone number, emergency contact name and phone number, and your insurance company's name, address and phone number.
Although tap water is safe, it would be a good idea to pack anti-diarrheal medicine, such as Imodium, as the change in cuisines, water and altitude can have an effect on your body's digestive system.
In the summertime, sunscreen should be used to avoid sunburn. During the winter, precautions should be taken to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Travelers to Austria must also be watchful of altitude sickness.

Traveling Safely
|
| Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. German is the official language of Austria. Knowing some basic German words and phrases is always appreciated, although many do speak some English. Carry your passport at all times - it really should not leave your possession during your entire journey. It can be replaced while you are abroad, but it is not easy.
Public transportation is clean, frequent and very safe. Roads are usually in good shape, but extra caution should be used when traveling on mountain roads and streets.

Customs & Immigration
|
| You are required to declare your belongings when you enter. Customs declaration forms are available on the plane, the ship, or at the Customs office.
Items you cannot take into or out of the country include: fresh fruit, arms, ammunition and explosives, narcotic drugs, animals and plants.
